Another wonderful week in Kindergarten! It is so exciting to see how much your children are growing and learning! We are more than halfway done and your children continue to amaze us and bless us :) Keep up the good work!

* Please let us know if you have any questions about the Planet Reports and 3D visuals. We can't wait to see them!
* Please scroll down to "Reading" for an important note!

REMINDER: We are requesting that each child bring in a small bag or shoebox to collect valentines.  An 8.5x11" standard gift bag would be the perfect size for your child to manage.  Please make sure that your child's name is very prominent. They may decorate as they like. Please send this and a valentine for each child in the class on Wednesday, February 13th.  A class list will be sent via email.

Math
Objectives: to understand what the different parts of a number bond represent; to understand different combinations of number bonds; to be able to count on to add using a number line.
  • We are continuing to practice addition this week and introducing the strategy of counting on to solve problems. It would be helpful for you to use a  number line with your student ( http://www.eduplace.com/math/hmm/tools/learning/1/1hmm07_lt_8.pdf ). We look at the number we're starting with and count on from there (ex:4+3  start with the number 4 and count up 3 more from there).
  • Remember that the hands-on (concrete) portion of the lesson is the most important. If your child is struggling with the paper portion (the abstract), go back to concrete. It is important to stay in the concrete phase as long as they need to.
  • There is more practice with addition on MATH BUDDIES!
Reading
Objectives: to begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with skills that have been taught this far; to continue to grow in reading fluency.
  • This week we are taking time to review, review, review. NEXT WEEK we will be moving into reading long vowels, which is a more difficult skill, so it is very important that you take the time this week to review any area that your child is struggling in, and encourage fluency when reading words.
  • Please go over the REVIEW paper that will be sent home in green folders.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Composition (see table)
Objectives: To write the capital letters and lower case letters correctly (typically top to bottom/left to right) on handwriting paper; to write first and last names correctly on handwriting paper; to be able to accurately copy a sentence, using handwriting lines correctly.
  • see table

Spelling
Objectives:  To be able to segment words with initial or final blends; to be able to write phrases from dictation.
  • There are not word cards or a "Spell on Paper" portion of the lesson this week, but there is still a "Dictate Phrases" portion. Please make sure that the phrases are written on manuscript paper and returned in green folders on Wednesday.

    History
Objectives: to gain an understanding that history began with God and creation; to see God's hand in every event.
    •  Song for the semester:  The Star-Spangled Banner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPKp29Luryc
    Geography
