Math
Objectives: to understand simple subtraction problems; to understand subtraction as whole minus a part; to understand and be able to use the counting back strategy to solve a subtraction problem.
  • This week we are counting back during subtraction. The big concept of these lessons are to realize that numbers have order and when we subtract we can use what we know about number order to count back. A number line is utilized in some of these lessons.  Please note in the lesson on page 81, counters (concrete stage) are assigned to the number line. Using a number line to add and subtract is an abstract concept. If your child is having trouble, please make sure that you continue to relate the counters with the number line. Remember, the main objective of these lessons is to connect number order with the subtraction operation.
Reading
Objectives: to read and accurately blend words and sentences with long a/silent e pattern; to be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel word.
  • This week we are venturing into the world of long vowels! We are focusing on silent "e" with long "a" this week. *Please read over the "Note to the Instructor" at the top of p.130
  • The sight word have is introduced in lesson 66.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Writing

Objectives: To write the capital letters and lower case letters correctly (typically top to bottom/left to right) on handwriting paper; to write first and last names correctly on handwriting paper; to be able to accurately copy a sentence, using handwriting lines correctly.
  • Handwriting this week will be Mark 12:30 (Our Kindergarten verse!) Ask your student to sing it for you :) Next week we will begin copywork over our new poem.
  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!
Spelling
Objectives:  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation; to be able to write simple phrases and sentences accurately from dictation.
  • You should have introduced key cards 7 and 8 in last Thursday's lesson. There is not a word list this week, but you will be dictating phrases.
  • Please make sure to have your student do their work in Spelling Journal and send to school.
History
Objectives: to gain an understanding that history began with God and creation; to see God's hand in every event.
  •  Song for the semester:  The Star-Spangled Banner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPKp29Luryc
Science
Objectives: to be able to identify the 8 planets in order of distance from the sun; to identify and describe the 5 phases of the moon; to be able to explain that the rotation of the earth is the reason we have night and day.
  • We are continuing to discuss the 5 phases of the moon (New Moon, Crescent Moon, Half-Moon, Gibbous Moon, and Full Moon).
  • Continue to review the planets song!
Geography
Objectives: to identify and name the Continents and Oceans on a map; to sing the names of the Southern States of the US.
  • Click here for the Geography songs for the year.
  •  Southern States of the US due 3/23
Memory Work

The difficulty level is increasing and your children are succeeding!  Your children are growing into more confident readers and spellers, and gaining a good sense of numbers through addition, subtraction and number bonds. Keep up the good work! Do not grow weary, you are investing your time and energy into educating your child, and pouring into them. Time well spent!

Math
Objectives: to understand simple subtraction problems; to understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
  • Now that we understand the concept of addition and subtraction, we will be relating part-part-whole/number bonds to addition and subtraction problems!
  • Since addition and subtraction number sentences (7-4=3) are very abstract, it is especially important that you are doing the hands-on, concrete, part of these lessons on the bottom of the page. The concrete experience is cornerstone to understanding concepts and developing number sense....and it is fun!
  • Please begin your math lesson by having your child write numbers 1-20 on paper or dry erase. Many students are consistently reversing them. While it is perfectly age appropriate, consistent daily practice will help ensure that correct number formation is solidified in their mind.
Reading
Objectives: to begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with skills that have been taught this far; to continue to grow in reading fluency.
  • This week we are taking time to review, review, review. NEXT WEEK we will be moving into reading long vowels, which is a more difficult skill, so it is very important that you take the time this week to review any area that your child is struggling in, and encourage fluency when reading words.
  • Please go over the REVIEW paper that will be sent home in blue folders.
  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!

Spelling
Objectives:  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation; to be able to write simple phrases and sentences accurately from dictation.
  • This week we are writing words with initial blends. If your child is struggling to write the words correctly, or leaving out a consonant, refer them back to the oral segmenting of the word with the chips. This way they can make sure they are accounting for every letter in the word.
  • ****Some students are still having difficulty differentiating SH, TH, CH when spelling words. Please continue to practice this!
  • This week we are discussing the 5 phases of the moon (New Moon, Crescent Moon, Half-Moon, Gibbous Moon, and Full Moon).
  • Please begin Moon Observation worksheet (in blue folders). This will be due back Monday, February 26th.. Please go outside and have your child look for the moon. Often times you can see the moon before it gets completely dark outside or even in the middle of the day. Have your child identify the moon phase and illustrate it on their sheet.
  • Here are 2 helpful websites, if the moon is not cooperating with visibility :) Have your child look at the picture it shows and identify it for you. While finding it in the night sky is ideal, it is not always an option.

Objectives: to begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that contain three consonant blends (scr, str, spl, spr).
  • Please make sure to go over each OPG reading lesson, including reviews, daily. Consistency and repetition is key, for creating beautiful, competent readers!
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
  • I have been sending home books in reading folders for each student at their appropriate reading level. However, if you feel that you would like your own phonics friendly books at home, you are welcome to copy and paste the link below for a list of phonetic readers that will go along well with our curriculum. *These are NOT  at all required or mandatory for you to purchase.
