Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7

We hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine's week! We have a busy week ahead, filled with new learning and fun. We are enjoying your sweeties!

Math
Objectives: to understand simple subtraction problems; to understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
  • We begin introduction to subtraction this week. We are emphasizing the fact that the minus sign really means "take away".
  • Remember that the hands-on (concrete) portion of the lesson is the most important. If your child is struggling with the paper portion (the abstract), go back to concrete. It is important to stay in the concrete phase as long as they need to.
  • Math Buddies:  Understanding Subtraction
Reading
Objectives: to read and accurately blend words and sentences with long a/silent e pattern; to be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel word.
  • This week we are venturing into the world of long vowels! We are focusing on silent "e" with long "a" this week. *Please read over the "Note to the Instructor" at the top of p.130
  • The sight word have is introduced in lesson 66.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Composition (see table)
Objectives: To write the capital letters and lower case letters correctly (typically top to bottom/left to right) on handwriting paper; to write first and last names correctly on handwriting paper; to be able to accurately copy a sentence, using handwriting lines correctly.
  • see table

Spelling
Objectives:  To be able to write words with final blends accurately from dictation; to be able to write simple phrases and sentences accurately from dictation.
  • This week we begin writing words with blends. If your child is struggling to write the words correctly, or leaving out a consonant, refer them back to the oral segmenting of the word with the chips. This way they can make sure they are accounting for every letter in the word.
  • Please make sure to put the paper from 'Spell on Paper' in the green folder, so that we can check it every Wednesday. Paper used for spelling in kindergarten should be manuscript lined paper (with a top, mid, and bottom line) to reinforce proper letter formation.
      History
Objectives: to gain an understanding that history began with God and creation; to see God's hand in every event.
      •  Song for the semester:  The Star-Spangled Banner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPKp29Luryc

      Geography
Objectives: to identify and name the continents and oceans on a map; to sing the name of locations in the West Indies.
      • West Indies will be assessed next Wednesday.
      Science
Objectives: to be able to identify the 8 planets in order of distance from the sun; to identify and describe the 5 phases of the moon; to be able to explain that the rotation of the earth is the reason we have night and day.
      •      We will be presenting Planet Reports and 3D models on Monday!

      Memory Work
      • Please take a few minutes each homeschool day to review memory work! (Poem, Proverbs verses, Geography)
