Kinder Week 26 (T/TH)

Important Dates:
3/12:  Spirit (no pizza) Day
3/16-3/20:  Spring Break!

This is the last week before Spring break! This year is just flying by. Your kiddos have worked so hard and are making amazing progress. We are so thankful for this partnership with you and continue to pray for peaceful, productive homeschool days for all of you.

After Spring Break we will begin the last quarter of kindergarten. In preparation for 1st grade, begin to allow your student some independence while doing their school work.  Instead of sitting right beside your child and walking them through each problem in the math workbook, do the teaching portion from the bottom of the page and some example problems together.  Then give your child the directions for the workbook page (just one page at a time) and walk away while they work.  Our goal is for them to be able to listen to the directions, understand and ask questions if needed, then do the assigned page without needing much more explanation. When they are finished, please have them correct their work with a crayon or colored pencil.  We want them to know that making mistakes is OK, it is part of the learning process!

*Please continue monitoring correct letter AND number formation. If your child writes one backward ask THEM to identify which one is backwards and self-correct.

Math
Objectives:
1.  To add or subtract from a number within 10
2.  To use a number line to add or subtract
3.  To understand the connection between number bonds and addition/subtraction
4.   To understand how to solve simple story problems.

  • This week we focus on both addition and subtraction. We want students to see the connection between adding and subtracting. This can easily be seen with number bonds. In addition we are missing the "whole", while in subtraction we are missing a "part". We continue to use a number line to add and subtract (counting forward in addition and counting back in subtraction). Remember to read through the "Introduction" at the bottom of the math pages. This is an important part of the lesson!
  • Here is a link to some number bond flashcards. Please encourage your student to use manipulatives to figure these out for now.
Reading
Objectives:
 1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with long a and long e/silent e pattern.
2.  To be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel sound.
3.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

  • We are continuing our study of long vowels with silent e. This can be tricky for some students, so please take your time at home to ensure understanding.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Writing
Objectives:
1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.
2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.
4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly.
  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation (letters start at the TOP or center...never from the bottom).

Spelling
1.  To be able to differentiate when to use a "c" vs "k" by using our spelling rule.
2.  To be able to write simple phrases and sentences from dictation.

  • Please begin each lesson by reviewing all phonogram cards introduced thus far, as well as all key cards. Repetition is key for retention at this tender age. Make it fun! Do a jumping jack as you say each sound, clap your hands, snap your fingers, etc.
  • *A reminder: Once we have covered a certain skill in AAS, we should begin holding our students accountable for using those skills on their own. Encourage them to write words and sentences using the skills they have learned.
  • Have your student correct mistakes using a crayon or colored pencil.
  • Please make sure to return Spelling Journals daily!
Geography
Objectives:
1.  To be able to sing the names of the southern states of the US.
2. To begin learning to draw the world map.

  • Click here for the Geography songs for the year.
  •  Southern States of the US due 3/26
Memory Work
Objectives:
1. To memorize "true, good, and beautiful" pieces and recite to the class.

*"Above the Bright Blue Sky" is our last poem of the year.

*Please take a few minutes each homeschool day to review memory work! (Poems, Geography song)

*We will be presenting Bible Bags this week.  Please have your child bring his/her Bible Bag in on Tuesday this week.

Important Dates:
3/7:     Fortis Preview Day:  Invite your friends!
3/12:  Spirit (no pizza) Day
3/16-3/20:  Spring Break!

It is hard to believe that we only have a little more than 2 months until the last day of school and 2 weeks until Spring Break! We pray that you and your student are continuing to delight in learning. I pray that you continue to enjoy your moments of schooling as you see the fruits of the love and labor of homeschooling.

Math
Objectives:
1.  To understand simple subtraction problems.
2.  To understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
3.  To understand and be able to use the counting back strategy to solve a subtraction problem.

  • This week we are counting back during subtraction. The big concept of these lessons are to realize that numbers have order and when we subtract we can use what we know about number order to count back. A number line is utilized in some of these lessons.  Please note in the lesson on page 81, counters (concrete stage) are assigned to the number line. Using a number line to add and subtract is an abstract concept. If your child is having trouble, please make sure that you continue to relate the counters with the number line. Remember, the main objective of these lessons is to connect number order with the subtraction operation.
Reading
Objectives:
 1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with long a/silent e pattern.
2.  To be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel sound.
3.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

  • This week we are venturing into the world of long vowels! We are focusing on silent "e" with long "a" this week. *Please read over the "Note to the Instructor" at the beginning of lesson 65.
  • The sight word have is introduced in lesson 66.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.

  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!
Spelling
1.  To be able to write words with th, sh, and ch from dictation
2.  To be able to write words with final blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation.
4.  To be able to write simple phrases and sentences from dictation.
  • There is not a word list this week, but you will be dictating phrases.
  • Please make sure to have your student do their work in Spelling Journal and send to school.
  • Have your student write the phrases in pencil first, then go back and have them correct their mistakes (or rewrite correctly) using a colored pencil or crayon.  This will help us to see which mistakes they are making consistently and know where we need to focus during review.  Feel free to turn the phrases into short sentences so they can practice starting their sentences with a capital letter and ending with a punctuation mark.  Watch to make sure they are putting spaces between their words as well.

Kinder Week 24 (T/TH)

This time of the year things speed up. The difficulty level is increasing and your children are succeeding!  Your children are growing into more confident readers and spellers, and gaining a good sense of numbers through addition, subtraction and number bonds. Keep up the good work! Do not grow weary, you are investing your time and energy into educating your child and pouring into them. Time well spent!

Important Dates:
2/20:  Daddy/Daughter Dance
2.21:  Talent Show
2/26:  Spirit/Pizza/DOGS day
3/7:     Fortis Preview Day:  Invite your friends!
3/12:  Spirit (no pizza) Day
3/16-3/20:  Spring Break!

BIBLE:  Have your child practice telling their assigned Bible story using the items in their Bible Bag.  Encourage them to tell their story to an audience of stuffed animals, siblings, and Facetime with grandparents.  The more they practice, the more confidence that they will gain! These will be presented to the class on March 3rd.

Math

Objectives:

1.  To understand simple subtraction problems.

2.  To understand subtraction as whole minus a part.

  • Now that we understand the concept of addition and subtraction, we will be relating part-part-whole/number bonds to addition and subtraction problems!
  • Since addition and subtraction number sentences (7-4=3) are very abstract, it is especially important that you are doing the hands-on, concrete, part of these lessons on the bottom of the page. The concrete experience is cornerstone to understanding concepts and developing number sense....and it is fun!
  • Please begin your math lesson by having your child write numbers 1-20 on paper or dry erase board. Many students are consistently reversing them. While it is perfectly age appropriate, consistent daily practice will help ensure that correct number formation is solidified in their mind.
Reading
Objectives:

1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with skills that have been taught thus far.
2.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

  • This week we are taking time to review, review, review. NEXT WEEK we will be moving into reading long vowels, which is a more difficult skill, so it is very important that you take the time this week to review any area that your child is struggling in, and encourage fluency when reading words.
  • Please go over the REVIEW paper that will be sent home in blue folders.

  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!
Spelling
1.  To be able to write words with th, sh, and ch from dictation
2.  To be able to write words with final blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write simple phrases and sentences from dictation.

  • This week we are writing words with initial blends. If your child is struggling to write the words correctly, or leaving out a consonant, refer them back to the oral segmenting of the word with the chips. This way they can make sure they are accounting for every letter in the word.
  • On Friday you will use the link to the older version of AAS to practice using c and k.  We will not have new words, but are just learning a new concept.  We have not taught them to read words with the soft c sound yet so this lesson can be a bit difficult which is why we like to take 2 weeks on this concept.
  • ****Some students are still having difficulty differentiating SH, TH, CH when spelling words. Please continue to practice this.
  • Please make sure to have your student do their work in Spelling Journal and send to school.
