Math
Objectives: to understand simple subtraction problems; to understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
  • Now that we understand the concept of addition and subtraction, we will be relating part-part-whole/number bonds to addition and subtraction problems!
  • Since addition and subtraction number sentences (7-4=3) are very abstract, it is especially important that you are doing the hands-on, concrete, part of these lessons on the bottom of the page. The concrete experience is cornerstone to understanding concepts and developing number sense....and it is fun!
    Reading
Objectives: to read and accurately blend words and sentences with long a and long e/silent e pattern; to be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel word.
    • We are continuing our study of long vowels with silent e. This can be tricky for some students, so please take your time at home to ensure understanding.
    • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
    Composition (see table)
Objectives: To write the capital letters and lower case letters correctly (typically top to bottom/left to right) on handwriting paper; to write first and last names correctly on handwriting paper; to be able to accurately copy a sentence, using handwriting lines correctly.
    • We hope you are noticing the beautiful fruits of your child's labor and the classical model approach to writing! These kindergarteners are writing the most beautiful sentences complete with spaces, capital letters, and punctuation. "But, wait.....they are just copying!" We hope you have seen this fallacy dispelled! At this tender age, your children are explicitly learning and practicing the mechanics of writing in an age appropriate manner.

    Spelling
Objectives:  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation; to be able to write simple phrases and sentences accurately from dictation.
    • This week we are writing words with initial blends. If your child is struggling to write the words correctly, or leaving out a consonant, refer them back to the oral segmenting of the word with the chips. This way they can make sure they are accounting for every letter in the word.
    • Please make sure to put the paper from 'Spell on Paper' in the green folder, so that we can check it every Wednesday. Paper used for spelling in kindergarten should be manuscript lined paper (with a top, mid, and bottom line) to reinforce proper letter formation.
        History
Objectives: to gain an understanding that history began with God and creation; to see God's hand in every event.

        Geography
Objectives: to identify and name the continents and oceans on a map; to sing the name of locations in the West Indies.
        • West Indies will be assessed on Wednesday.

        Science
Objectives: to be able to identify the 8 planets in order of distance from the sun; to identify and describe the 5 phases of the moon; to be able to explain that the rotation of the earth is the reason we have night and day.

        • This week we are discussing the 5 phases of the moon (New Moon, Crescent Moon, Half-Moon, Gibbous Moon, and Full Moon).
        • Please begin Moon Observation worksheet that was sent home on Monday, February 20th. This will be due back Monday, February 27th.. Please go outside and have your child look for the moon. Often times you can see the moon before it gets completely dark outside or even in the middle of the day. Have your child identify the moon phase and illustrate it on their sheet.
        • Continue to review the planets song!

        Memory Work
        • Please take a few minutes each homeschool day to review memory work! (Poem, Proverbs verses, Geography)
