Kinder Week 10 (T/TH)

**I hope everyone enjoys the day off on Tuesday and hopefully this will allow everyone time to heal from the crazy illness that has been going through our school!  

We are moving right along in our learning, and I am really enjoying the time with your children! Thank you for working so diligently with your children at home. It shows! I hope you are enjoying the extra family time and play time this school model allows.


On Tuesday, November 1st your kindergartener is allowed to dress in costume as a historical figure from our historical time-period (Creation to Modern time)  Fun! No toy weapons, though. Please make sure it allows for them to easily use the restroom :)

Math 
Objectives: 
1.  To be able to write the numerals 1-10.
2.  To recognize and name solid shapes
3. To be able to identify, describe, and extend simple patterns. (AB, AAB, ABB, AABB, ABC).
4. To be able to recognize and name some of the patterns God created in our world.
  • This week we are working on patterning. Make sure that you provide many hands-on  experiences to recognize, extend, and create patterns using shapes, colors, toys, sounds (clap,clap, slap), etc.
  • **Please continue reviewing numbers 1-10. Students should be able to name each number in isolation, quickly and accurately. 
  • Please also review names and attributes of flat vs. solid shapes (sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, cube, cone)
Reading
Objectives: 
1.  To produce all of the sounds of each of the first 26 phonograms.
2. To be able to blend together CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words using short a, e, i, o, and u.
3.  To be able to read sentences with current sight words and CVC words.

  • We are taking this week to review reading short vowel words and sentences before proceeding with our new OPG lessons. Please review lessons 27-40 on Wednesday and on Friday/Monday.
  • Have your child read past OPG readers for practice along with the WORD FANS that were sent home. The goal is for our students to be able to blend CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words accurately in order to read the word. 
  • IMPORTANT!!! Please expect your child to point to each word as they are reading sentences in their mini-books. This is called "tracking" and it is important when first learning to read.  If they are struggling with wanting to guess the word, have them point to each letter in the word and say each sound (then blend it). It is also very helpful to blend the first 2 sounds together first then have them add the last sound.
Writing 
Objectives: 
1. To be able to hold a pencil using proper pencil grip.
2 To  be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines. 
3. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
4. To be able to write name properly using only 1 capital letter.

  • Remember to continue handwriting practice on lined handwriting paper as well as HWT book.  Here is a link to some handwriting paper if you don't already have some on hand.
  • We begin lower case instruction this week!
Spelling
Objectives: 
1. To be able to write the correct phonogram when given the phonogram sounds.
2  To be able to segment 2 and 3 sound words.
3. To be able to blend sounds together to figure out the given word.

  • We will pick up with AAS step 5 the last week of October. For now, continue to review steps 1-4. Every daily lesson should include review of phonograms (yellow cards) and key cards (blue cards).
    Geography
    Objectives: 
    1. To be able to point to and say the northern states of the US on a map.
    2. To begin learning to draw the world map by drawing a compass rose, equator, and prime meridian.

    • We are beginning to experiment with "Blobbing" at school. Here is a short video you can watch if you would like to know more about the first step of blobbing that we will be attempting this week.
    •  Due 11/3, the Northern border of the United States.  Students will be required to sing the names of the states only. However, we will be pointing at them on the US map at school and you are welcome to print the map and do so as well. Here is a link to the geography songs and maps.


    Memory Work
    • Hymn of Joy. You can find this poem in your child's blue folder or on the blog under "Curriculum/Poetry".  We will be reciting this poem in song form.  Here is a link to the song.  We will only be doing the first stanza (and not quite as fast).   This poem will be assessed on 12/1.
