I hope everyone enjoyed their Valentine's week! This coming week is packed with learning and I can't wait!  This time of the year things speed up. The difficulty level is increasing and your children are succeeding!  Your children are growing into more confident readers and spellers, and gaining a good sense of numbers through addition, subtraction and number bonds. Keep up the good work! Do not grow weary, you are investing your time and energy into educating your child, and pouring into them. Time well spent!

BIBLE:   If your child is ready to present his/her Bible Bag please send it to school on Wednesday.

Math
Objectives:
1.  To understand simple subtraction problems.
2.  To understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
  • Now that we understand the concept of addition and subtraction, we will be relating part-part-whole/number bonds to addition and subtraction problems!
  • Since addition and subtraction number sentences (7-4=3) are very abstract, it is especially important that you are doing the hands-on, concrete, part of these lessons on the bottom of the page. The concrete experience is cornerstone to understanding concepts and developing number sense....and it is fun!
  • Please begin your math lesson by having your child write numbers 1-20 on paper or dry erase. Many students are consistently reversing them. While it is perfectly age appropriate, consistent daily practice will help ensure that correct number formation is solidified in their mind.
Reading
Objectives:

1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with skills that have been taught thus far.
2.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

  • This week we are taking time to review, review, review. NEXT WEEK we will be moving into reading long vowels, which is a more difficult skill, so it is very important that you take the time this week to review any area that your child is struggling in, and encourage fluency when reading words.
  • Please go over the REVIEW paper that will be sent home in blue folders.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Writing
Objectives:
1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.
2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.

4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly.

  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!
Spelling
1.  To be able to write words with th, sh, and ch from dictation
2.  To be able to write words with final blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write simple phrases and sentences from dictation.

  • This week we are writing words with initial blends. If your child is struggling to write the words correctly, or leaving out a consonant, refer them back to the oral segmenting of the word with the chips. This way they can make sure they are accounting for every letter in the word.
  • ****Some students are still having difficulty differentiating SH, TH, CH when spelling words. Please continue to practice this!
  • Please make sure to have your student do their work in Spelling Journal and send to school.
History
Objectives:
1. To be able to describe key events in the Bible and to learn from them.

2.  To see God's hand in every event.
  •  Song for the semester:  The Star-Spangled Banner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPKp29Luryc
Science
Objectives:
1. To be able to see God's provision for his creation in the weather.
2.  To understand why we have different types of weather.

This week we will be exploring more about hurricanes and how we can pray for people who are affected by them.

    Geography
    Objectives:
    1.  To be able to sing the names of the southern states of the US.
    2. To begin learning to draw the world map.

Another wonderful week in Kindergarten! It is so exciting to see how much your children are growing and learning! We are more than halfway done and your children continue to amaze me and bless me :) Keep up the good work!

REMINDER: We are requesting that each child bring in a small bag or shoebox to collect valentines.  An 8.5x11" standard gift bag would be the perfect size for your child to manage.  Please make sure that your child's name is very prominent. They may decorate as they like. Please send this and a valentine for each child in the class on Wednesday, February 13th.  Here is our class list:

      Math
      Objectives:
      1.  To complete number bonds for tens and ones.

      4.  To be able to count on to add using a number line/path.
      • February word problems for math journals will be sent home with your child on Monday. The first few problems will be a bit simpler. Since we have introduced addition and number bonds, after using a tool to come up with answer, I will be asking the kiddos to write a number sentence to match their story problem AND a number bond as well. You can draw the blank number bond for them and ask them to fill it in.
      • We are continuing to practice addition this week and introducing the strategy of counting on to solve problems. It would be helpful for you to use a  number line with your student ( Here is one for you to print if needed ). We look at the number we're starting with and count on from there (ex:4+3  start with the number 4 and count up 3 more from there).
      • Remember that the hands-on (concrete) portion of the lesson is the most important. If your child is struggling with the paper portion (the abstract), go back to concrete. It is important to stay in the concrete phase as long as they need to.

      Objectives:
      1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that contain the digraphs wh and ph as well as words with the ending blend nk.

Though we have not covered these lessons in AAS, these phonograms are encountered in reading and important to review.
