3/12:  Spirit (no pizza) Day
3/16-3/20:  Spring Break!

It is hard to believe that we only have a little more than 2 months until the last day of school and 2 weeks until Spring Break! We pray that you and your student are continuing to delight in learning. I pray that you continue to enjoy your moments of schooling as you see the fruits of the love and labor of homeschooling.

Math
Objectives:
1.  To understand simple subtraction problems.
2.  To understand subtraction as whole minus a part.
3.  To understand and be able to use the counting back strategy to solve a subtraction problem.

  • This week we are counting back during subtraction. The big concept of these lessons are to realize that numbers have order and when we subtract we can use what we know about number order to count back. A number line is utilized in some of these lessons.  Please note in the lesson on page 81, counters (concrete stage) are assigned to the number line. Using a number line to add and subtract is an abstract concept. If your child is having trouble, please make sure that you continue to relate the counters with the number line. Remember, the main objective of these lessons is to connect number order with the subtraction operation.
Reading
Objectives:
 1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with long a/silent e pattern.
2.  To be able to differentiate between a short vowel and a long vowel sound.
3.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

  • This week we are venturing into the world of long vowels! We are focusing on silent "e" with long "a" this week. *Please read over the "Note to the Instructor" at the beginning of lesson 65.
  • The sight word have is introduced in lesson 66.
  • Please follow up each lesson and mini book review, by having your child read to you, a book at their appropriate level. This should be done at a separate time of the day from their OPG lesson.
Writing
Objectives:
1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.
2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.
4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly.

  • Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation!
Spelling
1.  To be able to write words with th, sh, and ch from dictation
2.  To be able to write words with final blends accurately from dictation.
3.  To be able to write words with initial blends accurately from dictation.
4.  To be able to write simple phrases and sentences from dictation.
  • There is not a word list this week, but you will be dictating phrases.
  • Please make sure to have your student do their work in Spelling Journal and send to school.
  • Have your student write the phrases in pencil first, then go back and have them correct their mistakes (or rewrite correctly) using a colored pencil or crayon.  This will help us to see which mistakes they are making consistently and know where we need to focus during review.  Feel free to turn the phrases into short sentences so they can practice starting their sentences with a capital letter and ending with a punctuation mark.  Watch to make sure they are putting spaces between their words as well.
