 What a blessing it is to watch your children progress in their academics as well as their social skills!  Keep up the great work at home!




Valentines Day is quickly approaching! Please have your child bring in a small bag or shoebox to collect valentines.  An 8.5x11" standard gift bag would be the perfect size for your child to manage.  Please make sure that your child's name is very prominent. They may decorate it if they like. Please send this and a valentine for each child in the class on Thursday, February 12th.

2nd semester Project:  Bible Bags!
Each student will need to pick one Bible story to narrate and create a bag of 4 or more objects that represent their Bible story.  They will memorize and practice retelling the story to you several times, then they will present their stories to the class using their objects as props.  This week please just choose which story you and your child would like to explore and let us know on the Sign-up Genius form.  The link to the Sign Up Genius will be available later this weekend.


Math 
Objectives:
1.  To complete number bonds for tens and ones.
2.  To understand simple addition problems and relate addition equations to number bonds.
3.  To fill in missing part of a number bond.
  • We are performing operations on numbers! Though the first pages of addition discuss the = sign as 'makes', we will be using the definition of "same as" for the equals sign, as noted on page 44. 
  • Remember that the hands-on (concrete) portion of the lesson is the most important. If your child is struggling with the paper portion (the abstract), go back to concrete. It is important to stay in the concrete phase as long as they need to.
Reading
Objectives:
1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with "th" (voiced and unvoiced).

  • Please begin each lesson by having your child read over previous words and sentences. The mini-books are a great way to review as well.
  • This week we are reading words with voiced (ex:this) and unvoiced (ex:thin) "th". 
Writing 
Objectives:
1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.
2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.
4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly.
  •  Please make sure to watch your student as they do these pages.  Letters are typically formed top to bottom and left to right.  It will be a lot easier to break bad habits (like starting letters at the bottom line) now than it will be later!  This copybook gives you the opportunity to download some beautiful scripture into their growing brains!  Discuss with them what each verse means and encourage them to read it several times and try to memorize the scripture as they are doing the illustrations. 
Spelling
1.  To be able to spell words using the two sounds of "s".
2.  To be able to write words with th, sh, and ch from dictation
3.  To be able to write phrases from dictation
  • Add yellow phonograms th, sh, ch, ck, ng,  and nk to your daily review (if you have not already done so) - these have been covered in reading.
  • Please note the "Dictate Phrases" portion of the lesson. This is a new addition to the work load. Remind your student to put spaces between their words. Unless a proper noun, words should be written with lowercase letters. These are phrases and not complete sentences, so they do not have punctuation.  Feel free to turn these short phrases into complete sentences if you prefer as this is how it is done in class.

Geography

We are moving into some exciting and more challenging concepts in math! This is such a crucial time for really laying a good foundation of numbers for your little ones. We are enjoying your amazing kiddos immensely! It brings us great joy to be their teacher :)

  • We hope you are as giddy as We are about number bonds! We have entered into concepts that are foundational in building true understanding of numbers and operations! We are having so much fun in class using manipulatives to compose (3 and 4 make 7) and decompose (7 is made of 5 and 2) numbers to find the parts and whole! Make sure that you are doing the hands-on portion of the lesson in the "Introduction" section at the bottom of each math page. You don't want to miss out on the fun!
Reading
Objectives:

1.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that begin or end with ch and end with nch and tch.
  • Please begin each lesson by having your child read over previous words and sentences. The mini-books are a great way to review as well.
  • This week we are reading words with the the digraph ch and digraph blends tch and nch.
Writing 
Objectives:
1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.

4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly.
  • We are continuing copywork through oral narration in class.   We absolutely love that your student is copying scripture and responding to it through art at home!  Copywork is a great way to practice forming letters correctly.  Please spend the time to sit and watch how your child is forming their letters and not just give them the copywork assignments.
Spelling
1. To be able to write short vowel a, e,  i, o, and u. (CVC) words from dictation.
2.  To be able to spell words using the two sounds of "s".
  • Please go over yellow phonogram cards (name and sound of each letter) daily as well as rule cards. Please review syllables.  Try doing the phonogram cards "backwards", you give the phonogram sounds and the child responds with the actual phonogram.  
  • FIRDAY- Introduce "Lesson" and do lesson up to and including "Spell with Tiles."
    WEDNESDAY: Finish the lesson including "Spell on Paper"- Dictate the 10 words for your child to write in Spelling Journal. Practice "More Words" at home on dry erase board or journal. Please make sure to reinforce proper letter formation and writing correctly on the lined pages in the journal.

 It is going to be another great week in kindergarten!  It is so exciting to see your little ones picking up on reading more and more each day! One of the many wonderful things about Kindergarten is seeing them grow right before our eyes. That doesn't just mean academically, but also in growing fruits of the spirit. We love seeing your little ones grow in patience and self-control as they mature each day. Have a blessed week!

3.  To be able to compose and decompose numbers in different ways (number bonds).
  • Please continue working with your child on identifying numbers 1-20. They need to be able to write them correctly and also understand what each number really means (tens and ones).
  • This week we begin number bonds. Number bonds are a way to represent parts of a whole number. This involves composing and decomposing numbers (6 is made of 4 and 2; 2 and 4 make 6); which is a crucial component to developing number sense!
  • Please complete the "Introduction" at the bottom of the workbook pages assigned. This is an important step.  Following the concrete-pictorial-abstract sequence is very important in Singapore math.

Reading

  • This week we are reading words with the the digraph SH, SHR
We are introducing a new Phonemic Awareness Curriculum this week called Sounds First.  This is a curriculum that our first graders use so we are going to be starting that in kindergarten as well now. We have been doing Phonemic Awareness activities in class all year, but now you will be doing them at home as well.  The goal is for your student to be able to manipulate sounds easily in their heads to make new words and hear the different sounds in words. The Sounds First curriculum is written for educators so the verbage can be a bit overwhelming if you are not familiar with some of the vocabulary relating to sounds used in reading.  It has a lot of instructions that are for you as the teacher and these sections do not need to be read to the student.  This is going to feel awkward and clunky at first, please do not give up!  You DO NOT need to print the pages that are notated on the blog, all of the activities are done orally and you can do them from your computer screen.  

There are some videos at the bottom of this website:  https://www.readingdoneright.org/programs-by-grade that will give you an idea of how to do the activities as the hand motions are an important aspect.  

We began this curriculum with the students in class last week so they have been exposed to the motions and process...they will probably correct you if you do it differently!  My suggestion is that you look through the lesson and practice on your own before you sit down to do this with your child.  Once you get the hang of it, these lessons should not take more than 5 minutes.  

You can bookmark the  Sounds First Curriculum page so that it is easy to find each homeschool day.  HERE is the link.  This document is linked on the blog as well.  Have fun doing these activities with your child.

Science:   In our read aloud book Walter makes 2 different kinds of bread by varying his ingredients only slightly.  We will be discussing common bread ingredients and the difference between leavened and unleavened bread.  We will talk about the time when the Isrealites were in the desert and had no yeast to make their bread. This would be a fun week to make your own bread with your child!
