Important Dates:
12-5: Hymn of Joy and Continents and Oceans assessed
12-7: Classical Book exchange (refer to blog homepage for information)
We hope that you have a restful Thanksgiving break and that you are reminded daily of all the blessings we have to be thankful for.
We have two busy weeks of school before Christmas break! On Wednesday, December 7 we will have a book exchange in our class. We ask that you bring a new or gently used wrapped, classically appropriate, gender neutral book. Please explain to your child in advance, as we will also, that an exchange means that they will be giving this book away to a friend and they will be going home with a new book to enjoy. :)

Math
Objectives: to compare numbers and quantities; to be able to identify "how many more/less" a group has, compared to the reference set.
- This week we are comparing quantities and numbers. Make sure that you are using the terms greater and less as well as synonyms for these words, such as more, not as many, fewer, etc. Proper vocabulary with lots of discussions will help your child understand the concepts. Mid-week we move into the introduction to comparison operations (How many more? How many less?). This can be a very difficult concept for students to understand, so go into these lessons knowing that. Manipulatives and hands-on experiences are especially important for these lessons. Pair items and see how many are left over. In first grade this will lead into understanding that we can solve these problems with subtraction - but not yet! :)
Reading
Objectives: to begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that end with dipthong ng.
Objectives: to begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that end with dipthong ng.
- We will be spending all week on lesson 54. Please make sure to do this lesson each day (or part of the lesson) as well as reviewing previous lessons.
Composition (see table)
Objectives: To write the capital letters and lower case letters correctly (typically top to bottom/left to right) on handwriting paper; to write first and last names correctly on handwriting paper.

- WWE (Writing With Ease) style copywork through oral narration means that you should read a quality book to your child then discuss what they can remember about the book using complete sentences. Ask questions such as, "What happened at the beginning?" "What was your favorite part of the book?" "What happened at the end?". Also ask open ended questions like, "Why do you think _____ did ____ or acted a certain way?" "Were any of the characters showing any of the fruits of the spirit?". After the discussion, help your student pick one sentence about the book to write (keep it short and use simple words if possible). You will write the sentence on lined paper then the student will copy it on the same paper. Gently correct handwriting, spelling errors, and spacing issues as appropriate.
Spelling
Objectives: To be able to write short vowel/CVC words from dictation. This week focuses on short o.
- We are introducing key card 5 this week.
- Every Thursday, you will do the lesson up to and including "Spell with Tiles". Every Tuesday, you will finish the lesson, and dictate the 10 words for your child to write on manuscript paper. Please make sure to put the paper from 'Spell on Paper' in the green folder, so that we can check it every Monday. Paper used for spelling in kindergarten should be manuscript lined paper (with a top, mid, and bottom line) to reinforce proper letter formation.
History
Objectives: to gain an understanding that history began with God and creation; to see God's hand in every event.
Geography
Objectives: to identify and name the continents and oceans on a map.
**A new version of the Mexico song was emailed to you. It will better assist your student in learning 8 of the countries of Mexico. If you did not receive it please let us know.
