Kinder Week 1(T/TH)

                                              

  

Welcome to Kindergarten! I am looking forward to getting to know your precious little ones during this first week of school. We will be working on establishing routines and expectations and getting to know one another; because of this you will not see as much reflected in the subject areas on the calendar for the week.

Over the course of the next few weeks we will be learning about the Fruits of the Spirit. Tuesday is an introduction to all and then we will study one per day until all are covered. The Fruits of the Spirit will be used for classroom/behavior expectations as well as being incorporated into academics, such as discussing whether the character of a book was showing the fruits.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" Gal.5:22-23

Important Dates:
8/9 - First Day of School!
9/1 - Pizza Day/Spirit Day/DOGS day! Students can wear a Fortis T-shirt and jeans or uniform bottoms.

Math:

•   Please make sure that you are doing the introduction lessons (the hands-on teaching portion) at the bottom of the page, before your child does the worksheet pages. I have marked your child's workbook with a flag so that they can quickly find the next lesson. Please make sure to move this flag to the next uncompleted page after each lesson. 

Reading:

• We are skipping the first 26 lessons in Ordinary Parent Guide to Reading and instead teaching the single letter phonograms (letter names and sounds) through All About Spelling. The All About Learning Press phonogram app is available on all tablet/phone platforms and is a wonderful way for your child to practice on their own! You can search "Phonogram Sounds" in your App Store and the icon will be a bumble bee.
• Please go over the yellow phonogram cards (26 alphabet letters) at least once or twice EVERY DAY.  The child should say the letter's name and all of the sounds that the letter can make.  

Enrichment:

• Please complete the "God Made Only One Me!" sheet with your child and return to school on Thursday for sharing. Please write or spell any words that your child needs. It is not an expectation that they write the words, but they should draw themselves. :) Your child may also bring one special-to-them item for show-and-tell to share while they share their "God Made Only One Me!" paper.

Geography:

• Kindergarteners will be expected to be able to point to the Continents and Oceans on a map. There is a map in your child's blue folder.

Memory Work:

• Our memory poem for this quarter is "Jesus Died Your Soul To Save." We will practice this poem daily in class. Please practice daily at home as well.

Last Week of Kindergarten (T/TH)

What an amazing year we have had together! Your little ones have grown so much in so many ways. We give thanks to God for the privilege to teach along side you. We pray that you all have a safe, relaxing, joy filled summer. We are going to miss your precious children more than you know! We love them with all of our hearts!


**Please send your child to school on Wednesday with an EMPTY backpack, a full water bottle, snack, and a lunch** 

Attire: Students may wear spirit shirts and uniform bottoms or jeans. We have several outdoor activities planned (weather permitting) so shorts would be best.


Now that we are at the end of the school year, many parents have wondered what they can do to keep skills and knowledge up over the summer. Here are some optional suggestions for the summer months, but remember to have fun, enjoy your family time, and relax over the break!

• Read aloud daily. Choose a story that the whole family would like to listen to. It is great to read a few levels above your child's personal level so they are exposed to rich vocabulary. Let your child narrate the story or act it out using their stuffed animals to make sure they understood what they heard.
• Reading - READ, READ, READ...have your student read passages from the OPG book as well as books on their reading level. First grade will pick up where we left off in Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading next year. Review the lessons that we covered this year and have your child read on a regular basis. Here (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-0zjg0o6uQVFwRNxyTRN19QjLIYRT75v) are some online books that your student can practice with over the summer.  You can print them and have your student color them or they can read from the computer screen. This website https://portal.flyleafpublishing.com/ has free e-books as well that have full color pictures.  Work through the simple stories encouraging them to read with fluency instead of one-word-at-a-time :)
• Spelling -Keep reviewing the phonogram cards AND key cards.  They will forget them if they don't review them for 3 months!  Make it fun by having them jump, squat or do a jumping jack for each sound.  Dictate words, phrases and simple sentences that cover the spelling rules we have covered this year. Use dry erase boards, chalk on the sidewalk, handwriting paper, etc. 
• Handwriting - Write more complex sentences on handwriting paper and have them copy it using proper spacing, punctuation, and letter formation.  Have them copy scripture straight from the Bible if they are ready! Use the website https://worksheetworks.com/english/writing/handwriting.html to make your own copywork.  Use the setting for print handwriting practice, 1/2 inch tall lines, remove the descender line, and use double spacing.  
• Math  - Continue oral counting and reading and writing numbers to 100 with gentle correction on backwards numbers. Count large groups of items by making groups of 10. Work on place value - tens and ones (p.143). Tell number stories - "John has 7 cats and 3 birds. How many pets does John have?"/ "Sam has some puppies. His mom gave him 3 more. Now he has 11. How many puppies did Sam have to start with?" Encourage them  to use their addition and subtraction skills, as well as the tools we have introduced (number bonds, number lines, ten frames). Have them count objects by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's.  Practice ways to make 10. 1st grade will start the year with this.  Play lots of card games and dice games to strengthen flexibility with numbers and to bond with your child!
• Review all of the geography songs that we have done this year, especially Continents and Oceans.
• Go outside and enjoy God's beautiful creation!

Hang in there, you are almost done!  It has been such an amazing year and you have all done a fantastic job with these kids.  They are so sweet, so polite, so helpful, and now they are READERS and spellers and mathematicians! Congratulations!

•  Please make sure that you complete the lesson at the bottom of the pages and extend it by using other numbers/scenarios.

• We are working on counting by 5's (to 50) and by 2's (to 20). Please work on this orally with your student.

Reading

Objectives:

1.  To review reading and accurately blending words and sentences with long vowel/silent e pattern.

2.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences with the vowel pairs ai and ay.

3.  To continue to grow in reading fluency.

• Have your child read to you every day! READ,READ, READ!!!!

Writing 

Objectives:

1. To be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.

2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.

3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.

4. To be able to accurately copy a sentence (using handwriting lines) correctly

• Keep monitoring proper pencil grip and correct letter formation! Have your student self-correct any backward letter or number! They should be gaining speed and accuracy in their copywork, by this point in the year.

Spelling

• Please introduce Key Cards 14, 15, 16 this week. Continue to review all key cards (especially 11, 12, 13), along with phonograms at the beginning of each lesson.
