*We have added our third poem for memorization. It's a beautiful one! Take a moment to really discuss with your child the meaning of the melodious words.

Above the Bright Blue Sky by Albert Midlane

There's a Friend for little children
Above the bright blue sky,
A Friend who never changes
Whose love will never die;
Our earthly friends may fail us,
And change with changing years,
This Friend is always worthy
Of that dear name he bears.

There's a home for little children
Above the bright blue sky,
Where Jesus reigns in glory,
A home of peace and joy;
No home on earth is like it,
Nor can with it compare;
And everyone is happy,
Nor could be happier there.

Math
Objectives:
1.  To be able to identify "how many more/less" a group has compared to the reference set.
2. To identify and name numbers 11-20
3. To be able to order numbers 1-20.
4. To gain an understanding of tens and ones in a numeral.

  • This week we are focusing on numbers to 20; identifying them and putting them in order. We will be reviewing before and after with numbers (ex: What number is 1 more than 15? What number comes before 18?). We are also continuing to build understanding of tens and ones (ex: 17 is 10 and 7 more).
Reading
Objectives:
1.  To read and accurately blend words that end with consonant blend "nk".
2.  To begin reading and accurately blending words and sentences that end with dipthong ng.
  • We will be spending all week on lesson 54. Please make sure to do this lesson each day (or part of the lesson) as well as reviewing previous lessons.
Writing
Objectives:
1. To  be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines.
2. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
3. To be able to  write first and last name properly on handwriting lines.
  •  Copywork through oral narration was introduced in class before the break and will continue throughout the rest of the year.   All narrations will be done in the spelling journal behind the tab.  This means that we read a quality book and then discuss what students can remember about the book using complete sentences.  Asking questions such as, "What happened at the beginning?"  "What was your favorite part of the book?" "What happened at the end?".  Also asking open ended questions like, "Why do you think _____ did ____ or acted a certain way?"  "Were any of the characters showing any of the fruits of the spirit?".  After the discussion, I ask the students to tell me a complete sentence about something they can remember from the story. We pick one sentence about the book to write (keeping it short and using simple words if possible).  I write the sentence on the board, modeling aloud the writing process and getting them to help me with any skills they should already know. The student will then copy the sentence in their journal.  I gently correct handwriting, spelling errors, and spacing issues as appropriate.  ***Feel free to practice this at home, it is not mandatory for home yet, but certainly helpful (and enjoyable!)
  • Continue to work on first and last name with proper capitalization as well as writing upper and lowercase alphabet correctly on lined paper.
Spelling
1. To be able to write short vowel a,e,  i, o, and u. (CVC) words from dictation.
  • Please go over yellow phonogram cards (name and sound of each letter) daily as well as blue key cards. You will introduce key card 6 this week.
  • THURSDAY- Introduce "Step" and do lesson up to and including"Spell with Tiles."
TUESDAY: Finish the lesson including "Spell on Paper"- Dictate the 10 words for your child to write in Spelling Journal. Practice "More Words" at home on dry erase board or journal. Please make sure to reinforce proper letter formation and writing correctly on the lined pages in the journal.
  • ****Spelling Journals will need to come to school every school day so I can check them!(Bring every day- Blue folder, Math book, Math Journal, Spelling Journal)
History
Objectives:
1. To be able to describe key events in the Bible and to learn from them.
2.  To see God's hand in every event.

Science
Objectives:
1. To be able to see God's provision for his creation in the weather.
2.  To understand why we have different types of weather.

We will begin our study of weather this week!  On Monday we will begin charting the weather for the month of January.  Each day your child will need to color in that day's date according to the key that is on the Weather Chart that they will bring home on Monday.  Throughout the month we will use the charts for math practice too so please have your student keep their chart in their blue folder at all times.

12/10-1/6 - CHRISTMAS BREAK

What a wonderful blessing that we can continue reading and talking about the reason and meaning of Christmas in class this week. I pray that your Christmas is filled with the joy that is brought through knowing that He came for us! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful and precious children with me. I love each one of them and will miss their smiling faces in the coming weeks. Snuggle them, love them, and enjoy this wonderful season with them. See you next year :)

It is a busy week!  Please remember to send a wrapped, classically appropriate, new or gently used, gender neutral book by Wednesday.
Have a wonderful Christmas break!!!!

(Our 4 week break is wonderful, but also a long time to not do school work. In order to avoid any regression,  you will definitely want to make sure your kiddo reads to you, reviews phonograms, and reviews some math concepts. You've worked hard to get this far! Don't lose all the fruits of that investment!)

4. To understand that numbers higher than 9 consist of tens and ones, and identify each quantity.
  • This week we are talking about tens and ones. When discussing numbers greater than 9, we learn that our numbers follow a pattern in the base 10 number system and have place value. That 1 in 12 is not just a 1; its value is 10. So, when we discuss teen numbers this week, we will be emphasizing "ten and 2" make 12.

Welcome back!!!! I hope that you had a restful Thanksgiving break and that you are reminded daily of all the blessings we have to be thankful for.

We have two busy weeks of school before Christmas break! On Wednesday, December 5th we will have a book exchange in our class. We ask that you bring a new or gently used wrapped, classically appropriate, gender neutral book. Please explain to your child in advance, as I will also, that an exchange means that they will be giving this book away to a friend and they will be going home with a new book to enjoy. :)

Math
Objectives:
1. To compare sets (using different strategies) to determine which set has more or less
2.  To compare numbers and quantities.
3. To be able to identify "how many more/less" a group has compared to the reference set.
  • This week we are comparing quantities and numbers. Make sure that you are using the terms greater and less as well as synonyms for these words, such as more, not as many, fewer, etc. Proper vocabulary with lots of discussions will help your child understand the concepts. Mid-week we move into the introduction to comparison operations (How many more? How many less?). This can be a very difficult concept for students to understand, so go into these lessons knowing that. Manipulatives and hands-on experiences are especially important for these lessons. Pair items and see how many are left over. In first grade this will lead into understanding that we can solve these problems with subtraction - but not yet! :)
Reading
Objectives:
1.  To read and accurately blend words that end with consonant blend "nk".
2.  To begin reading and accurately blending words with beginning blends.
  • You will note that we are spending this whole week on lesson 52. Beginning blends, especially r blends, can take a little longer for students to master. Please make sure that you give this lesson full attention each day, even though we are spending a whole week on it. It can be quite common for students (and adults!) to miss the pronunciation of r blends. A common mistake that we will be working on clarifying is the tr blend. This blend is often mistakenly pronounced as chr. It is especially important to pay attention to mouth and tongue placement during this lesson!
  •  Here is a helpful video for parents to help correct these common errors: http://www.rachelsenglish.com/videos/tr-dr-and-str
  • This video will help parents help students practice and fix any errors they might encounter with the r: http://www.rachelsenglish.com/videos/holding-out-r
