Kinder Week 7 (T/TH)

We are READING!  We are so excited about the progress that all of the kindergarteners are making in being able to sound out words.  It is tedious and slow at first, but the more encouragement and praise they receive from you, the more excited they will get once they realize that they CAN do hard things!  We will be sending home "word fans" this week (short lists of short vowel words).  These are great to use in the car or stick in your purse to work on sounding out short vowel words as you wait in line somewhere. We hope you find them helpful.

We have begun adding "grades" into Alma.  In kindergarten through 2nd grade your child will be graded on objectives and given a score between 1 and 4.

4.  Mastered Objective:  Can perform the objective easily without any help every time.

3.  Met Objective: Can perform the objective most of the time, but may need a little reminder.

2.  Approaching Objective:  Can only perform the objective with guidance and help.

1. Struggling with Objective:  Can not perform the objective or is not developmentally ready to perform this objective.

In Alma please ignore the percentages as Alma is not set up to do grading like we want.  If your child has a 3 then that means they have mastered the objective.  If they receive a 1 or 2 on any objective, please devote some extra time (beyond what is assigned on the blog) to that area and help them to master that objective.  If you have any questions on how to help your child please let me know!

Important Dates:
9/25 - Spirit/DOGS/Pizza Day
10/2 - End of first quarter
10/14 - Parent-Teacher Conferences
10/21 - Picture Retakes
10/24 - Fall Festival
10/30 - Historical Dress Up Day (kindergarteners can dress up as any Biblical character)
10/30 - DOGS/Pizza Day!

**Tuesday, October 14th the kiddos will not have school.  We will set aside some time that day for Teacher/Co-teacher conferences.  These are not required.  If your student has mastered all of the objectives and you don't have any concerns, you do not need to schedule a conference.  However, if you or your child are struggling during home school days or your child is struggling to master concepts, we would to meet with you to encourage you and offer some ideas on how to help. Below are the links to sign up for conference times if you would like to get together.

Math
Objectives:
1. To be able to count and recognize the numerals 1-10
2  To be able to write the numerals 1-10.
3.  To be able to represent the numerals 1-10 on a ten frame.
  •  We are really working on not only identifying and writing numbers 0-10, but also looking at different ways to see those numbers. In class, we do this through the use of subitizing cards, ten frames, rekenreks, etc. Although it may seem as though we are moving slowly, please know that our goal is to really give the children a strong foundation in number sense. Numbers are beautiful! They are everywhere! Mathematics is one of God's languages. Take a look around at His wonderful creation and see where numbers can be found.
  • Please have your student bring his/her math journal to class each day.
Reading
Objectives:
1. To recognize all upper and lower case letters.
2  To produce all of the sounds of each of the first 26 phonograms.
3. To be able to blend together CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words using short a, e, and i.
  • Remember to review previous lesson before moving on to new one!
  • The "Mini-books" that we do during class are a great way to review and practice. You might want to keep them all in a zip lock bag to have a great toolbox of books your child can read on his/her own. There will be one coming home every school day!
Writing
Objectives:
1. To be able to hold a pencil using proper pencil grip.
2 To  be able to form all upper case letters properly.
3. To get all upper case letters sitting properly on handwriting lines.
  • Please keep working on pencil grip and making proper handwriting strokes! (generally left to right, top to bottom).
Spelling
Objectives:
1. To be able to write the correct phonogram when given the phonogram sounds.
2  To be able to segment 2 and 3 sound words.
3. To be able to blend sounds together to figure out the given word.
  • Go over yellow phonogram cards and blue key cards at least twice a day.
  • Please continue to review AAS Lessons 1-5. We will resume with Lesson 6 in a few weeks.
  • Continue blending and segmenting words (ex: cat=c/a/t, c/a/t=cat)
    Geography:
    • Kindergarteners will be expected to sing the song for the Northern States of the United States. Being able to point to the states as they sing is important, but will not be a part of the assessment.  We will be practicing pointing to the states in class and you are encouraged to practice this at home as well.  There is a map in your child's blue folder that you can use to practice. Click here for the song we use in class.
    Memory Work:
    •  "Jesus Died Your Soul to Save".  Students will say title, author, and then recite poem on Thursday.

    Math
    • Though it may feel like we are going slow or the curriculum is not challenging enough, there are many foundational math skills that we are developing in these first few units. Identifying sets, assigning a numeral to a set to make it a number, and writing digits are skills that we often clump all together with 'counting', but they are each their own math milestone! The units that we are covering in "book A" are preparing us for the big things we will be doing down the road!
    • This week will continue our math journals! Your child should have gotten a math journal and a set of journal prompts in class last week.  Please make sure to allow your child to cut out the journal prompt before gluing it into their journal.  Watch them carefully to make sure they are holding the scissors properly (thumb on top, elbow in).
    Reading:
    • Our OPG lessons have begun! It might be helpful for your little one if you write the words on a dry erase board for him/her to read as the small print of the OPG book can feel intimidating to some students.  A minibook will come home with your child every school day.  Keep these books in a baggie and pull out an old one for review before starting a new lesson.
    • Click here for a link to the short vowel story rhymes we introduce in class (this week is "short a").  This document also gives a hand signal to help the children remember the short vowel sound of the vowels. Example:  Short A (an ant) is rather grouchy.  Anytime one of the other letters tries to talk to her she says, “Ahhhhh, get out of here.” (Hold up all ten fingers)
    Writing:
    • Please continue to enforce correct pencil grip and proper handwriting strokes! You are helping create habits that will last a lifetime and improve efficiency in writing.
    • As you work on the number formation pages in HWT, please feel free to modify the numerals 2 and 6 from what the book shows.
    Spelling
    • Review phonogram and rule cards.
    • Lesson 4 is rich in letter, phonogram, and phonics work. Though this lesson was covered last week, please continue to segment words, alphabetize letter tiles, and dictate sounds with writing

We are having so much fun getting into a learning routine with your little ones! At Fortis we not only value academics, but their heart and their spirit as well. We have been focusing on love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and what it looks like to care for others. We are reading some wonderful stories, as well as beautiful scripture.

~Love, Miss Chun & Mrs. Penner

    Important Dates:
9/2 - Labor Day:  No School
9/11 - Spirit Day (no pizza)
    9/25 - Spirit/DOGS/Pizza Day
10/2 - End of first quarter
    10/14 - Parent-Teacher Conferences

We are ready to read! This week we will start the lessons from Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading (OPG) beginning with lesson 27 in class. Continue daily practice of the 26 individual letter phonograms from Lesson 1 of All About Spelling. We will be working through Lesson 5 of All About Spelling because the lessons are applicable to reading. After Lesson 5, we will be taking a break to establish reading prior to introducing spelling.

***Assessment results are now posted in Alma.  Please go to fortis.getalma.com and sign in to see your child's results.  For all objectives that your child has a 1 or 2, please provide your child with extra practice in these areas.  Some of these assessments were done the first or second week of school so they may have learned more since then!

Math :  ***Please make sure that the assignments for Friday/Monday are completed before class on Tuesday.  If your child is in Friday electives you can have them do the Friday work over the weekend or on Monday.    Also please make sure that your child only does the pages that are assigned.  Do not allow them to work ahead in their math books.
    • Please make oral counting part of your daily routine. This can easily be done on your car ride to school or while playing hide and go seek!  Also give them opportunities to count large groups of objects such as buttons, dried pasta, crayons, etc.
    • Numbers 0-10 may seem like an easy skill, but in class, we are using tools such as a ten frame, number line, rekenreks , and subitizing cards to really solidify the understanding of these numbers. We want our students to have very strong number sense. We encourage you to use these tools at home as well.
    • Story problems are another great tool you that you will be adding to your math lessons. Your child will receive a math journal and monthly journal prompts this week. Please have your child cut out the journal prompt and glue it to the bottom of the journal page. Watch to make sure they are holding their scissors correctly (thumb on top, elbow in). Read the prompt to your child and give your child manipulatives or one of the different math tools mentioned above if needed (this won't be necessary in September). Let them choose how they would like to solve the problem. After they come up with an answer, have them explain to you how they came up with it. In the beginning encourage them to draw pictures in their journal to represent the story problem instead of writing number sentences. You are welcome to add additional story problem prompts to their journals beyond what is assigned.
    Examples:
    •  I see 4 bees and 3 ladybugs in the garden. How many insects do I see?
    •  Johnny had 7 apples. He gave 2 to his brother. How many are left?
    •  Sally had some cookies. Her friend gave her 3 more. Now she has 7 cookies. How many cookies did she have to start with?
    •  There were 6 crickets. Some hopped away. Now there are 3 left. How many crickets hopped away?
    •  Sarah baked 3 pies. She used 2 apples to make each pie. How many total apples did she  use?
    Reading:
    • Lessons 27 and 28 are made more difficult because they include "an" and "am" words as if they have the short a sounds.  However, in Texas these words do not have a distinct short a sound.  I teach "an" and "am" as glued sounds.  I encourage you to create 2 new phonogram cards to add to your stack, one for each of these sounds.  Practice them daily with the other phonogram cards so your child will eventually recognize that when they see an a followed by a n or m, then they know to use the correct (Texan) pronunciation of the phonogram.
    • Please read the instructor note in Lesson 27 about sounding out words - when sounding out, phonograms should not be separated, they should be blended - no pausing or stopping between letter sounds. This will take some practice, but start now to create good habits.
    •  For Lesson 28 use your All About Spelling letter tiles and board.
    Spelling :
    • Review phonogram and key cards.
    • Continue to review the first 4 lessons for practice with pre-reading skills.

    Geography:
    • Kindergarteners will be expected to be able to point to the Continents and Oceans on a map. Click here for the song we use in class. There is a map in your child's blue folder to use to practice pointing.  Due 9/18

    •  Please work on memorizing our poem "Jesus Died Your Soul to Save".  Students will say the scripture (optional but encouraged),  title, author, and then recite poem on September 25th.
