Kinder Week 11 (T/TH)

                                              



By this time in our parenting journey, we all know the important role the family plays in our children's respectful obedience.  As homeschooling mommas, we have the added benefit of observing the true hearts of our children in the comfort of our homes on a regular basis and are well acquainted with their discipline needs, but we still benefit from motivational reminders of what our goals in this area include.  Here are some links you may enjoy.  Happy Parenting!

Math 
Objectives: 
1.  To be able to write the numerals 1-10.
2. To be able to identify, describe, and extend simple patterns. (AB, AAB, ABB, AABB, ABC).
3. To be able to recognize and name some of the patterns God created in our world.
4.  To compare the length of objects by making direct comparisons with reference objects
5.  To measure objects using non-standard units of measurement.
  • This week we are working on length using non-standard units (ex:paper clips, unifix cubes, etc). *Please give your child some hands-on practice measuring things at home with non-standard units. Refer to the bottom of the workbook pages for activities.

Reading

Objectives: 
1.  To be able to read sentences with current sight words and CVC words.
2.  To be able to read and accurately blend words that end in a double consonant (ss,ff,ll)
3.  To read and accurately blend words that end with "ck"
  • "Two Review and One New" on page 92 will be a part of every lesson. Please make sure that you include this in your daily lesson every time.
Writing 
Objectives: 
1. To be able to hold a pencil using proper pencil grip.
2 To  be able to form all upper case letters properly on handwriting lines. 
3. To be able to form all lower case letters properly on handwriting lines.
4. To be able to write name properly using only 1 capital letter.
5. To be able to write the alphabet on handwriting paper from memory.

  • Remember to continue handwriting practice on lined handwriting paper as well as HWT book. 
  • Practice writing the alphabet from memory.  

Spelling

Objectives: 
1. To be able to write the correct phonogram when given the phonogram sounds.
2  To be able to segment 2 and 3 sound words.
3.  To be able to blend sounds together to figure out the given word.


  • Please assess your child on the 26 single letter phonograms using the form in your child's folder or it can be found here. Show them the phonogram card and mark which phonograms they have not mastered (they must know all of the sounds not just one to show mastery).  You will only be doing Assessment 1 at this time.  Return the assessment on Wednesday.
  • We will pick up with AAS step 5 the last week of October. For now, continue to review steps 1-4. Every daily lesson should include review of phonograms (yellow cards) and key cards (blue cards).
History 
Objectives: 
1. To be able to point to and say the northern states of the US on a map.
2. To be able to describe key events in the Bible and to learn from them.
3.  To see God's hand in every event.


Science
Objectives: 
1. To be able to name all 8 planets in order. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune)
2. To be able to give characteristics of each planet


Geography
Objectives: 
1. To be able to point to and say the northern states of the US on a map.
2. To begin learning to draw the world map by drawing a compass rose, equator, and prime meridian.

  •  Due 11/4. Students will be required to sing the names of the States only. However, we will be pointing at them on the US map at school and you are welcome to print the map and do so as well.
Memory Work
  • Hymn of Joy will be assessed on 12/2.

We are moving right along in our learning, and we are really enjoying the time with your children! Thank you for working so diligently with your children at home. It shows! I hope you are enjoying the extra family time and play time this school model allows.


On Thursday, Oct. 28th your kindergartener is allowed to dress in costume as a historical figure from our historical time-period (Creation to Modern time)  Fun! No toy weapons, though. Please make sure it allows for them to easily use the restroom :)

  • This week we are working on patterning. Make sure that you provide many hands-on  experiences to recognize, extend, and create patterns using shapes, colors, toys, sounds (clap,clap, slap), etc.
  • **Please continue reviewing numbers 1-10. Students should be able to name each number in isolation, quickly and accurately. 
  • Please also review names and attributes of flat vs. solid shapes (sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, cube, cone)
Reading
Objectives: 
1.  To produce all of the sounds of each of the first 26 phonograms.
2. To be able to blend together CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words using short a, e, i, o, and u.
3.  To be able to read sentences with current sight words and CVC words.

  • We are taking this week to review reading short vowel words and sentences before proceeding with our new OPG lessons. Please review lessons 27-40 on Wednesday and on Friday/Monday.
  • Have your child read past OPG readers for practice along with the WORD FANS that were sent home. The goal is for our students to be able to blend CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words accurately in order to read the word. 
  • IMPORTANT!!! Please expect your child to point to each word as they are reading sentences in their mini-books. This is called "tracking" and it is important when first learning to read.  They can point with their index finger or with a fun "pointer" (popsicle stick, long witch nail, etc) If they are struggling with wanting to guess the word, have them point to each letter in the word and say each sound (then blend it).

    What an amazing blessing it is that we all get to partner in this awesome task of educating these precious children. Praying for you and your children as you continue this journey.


    We have begun giving you the Objectives for the week in the notes below, bearing in mind that your student may need more than what is in the box/chart to meet the objectives.  Feel free to ask if you need any help making your home days work for you and your child.  This is just one of the beautiful things about our model :)

    1. Name, recognize and order numbers 1-10
    2. Identify and compare basic shapes
    3. Recognize solid shapes 
    4. Identify basic shapes on solids.
    • While learning about shapes this week, we will pay special attention to the attributes of each shape. Be sure to incorporate this into your home lessons. Ex: "How do we know this is a square and not a rectangle? A square has four sides that are the same. A rectangle has 2 short sides and 2 longer sides. They both have 4 corners/vertices."
    • IMPORTANT: When studying three-dimensional shapes, we will use the correct terminology rectangular prism and not box. Please use the correct terminology at home as well.
    • Please have your child complete worksheet: "Solid Shape Scavenger Hunt". Please return Tuesday, October 12th to share with the class.
    • **Please continue reviewing numbers 1-10. Students should be able to name each number in isolation, quickly and accurately.

    Reading
    Objectives: 
    1. To be able to sound out CVC words with all 5 short vowels
    2. To be able to blend the sounds to read the word
    3. To begin reading short sentences
    • Cards for lesson 40 in OPG can be found here.
    • Please take this time to review reading short vowel words. It is perfectly normal if your child is not quick and fluent yet at reading the words, but we do want to make sure they are sounding out and blending the word at the end.
    • Pay special attention to how your child pronounces short e versus short i.  Sometimes they can sound similar.  In class I tell them that the short e is said with a wide open mouth, and the short I is said with a scrunched up face.  
    • Continue practicing sounding out short vowel words using the WORD FANS that were sent home previously.
    Writing 
    Objectives: 
    1. To be able to hold a pencil using proper pencil grip.
    2 To  be able to form all upper case letters properly.
    3. To get all upper case letters sitting properly on handwriting lines. 
    • Please continue to monitor pencil grip and correct letter formation! Remember that the habits you establish now could last a lifetime!
      Spelling
      Objectives: 
      1. To be able to write the correct phonogram when given the phonogram sounds.
      2  To be able to segment 2 and 3 sound words.
      3.  To be able to blend sounds together to figure out the given word.
      • Go over yellow phonogram cards and blue key cards at least twice a day.  Here is a video with almost 100 different ways to practice phonograms!
      • Please continue to review AAS steps 1-4. We will resume with step 5 in a few weeks.
      • Continue blending and segmenting words and alphabetizing the letters.
      • Dictate the 26 phonograms for your student to write from memory! 
          History 
          Objectives: 
          1. To be able to point to all of the continents and oceans on a map.
          2. Recognize that all history began with creation.
          3. To understand how sin entered the world.
          4. To be able to describe key events in the Bible and to learn from them.
            Science
            Objectives: 
            1. To be able to name the planets in order.
            2. To be able to name some distinguishing characteristics of each planet.
            3. To be able to name the phases of the moon.

            • This week we are discussing asteroids, comets, meteors, and meteoroids.
            Geography
            Objectives: 
            1. To be able to name and point to the continents and oceans.
            2.  To be able to name the states on the northern border of the US.
            • We are beginning to experiment with "Blobbing" at school. Here is a short video you can watch if you would like to know more about the first step of blobbing that we will be attempting this week!
